The annual trail run around Hjörleifshöfði will take place on Saturday 22nd of April 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Hjörleifshöfði is a famous geosite within Katla Geopark and located about 15-20 minutes driving (15 km) East of Vík. The run takes place within the festival “Vor í Vík - environmental and cultural days in Mýrdalur” and we encourage everyone to check out the other activities related to the festival on the “Vor í Vík” Facebook page.

Distances 

There are three trail options, 2,5 km, 7 km and 11 km. All trails begin and end at the same point. The 2,5 km is back and forth on by Hjörleifshöfði, 7 km encircle Hjörleifshöfði on relatively flat, sandy ground and for those interested in a further challenge can continue another 4 km to the top of Hjörleifshöfði (221m), continuing back down to the starting (and ending) point, a total run of about 11 km.

Registration 

See online pre-registration at the top of this page until 20:00 on Friday 21st of April. 

Participation fee 

Participation fee is 2500 kr for 15 years and older and 1500 kr for 14 years and younger. 

After the run, Mýrdalshreppur municipality offers free admission to the local swimming pool.   

Prize 

Everyone who participates and completes the run will receive an participation medal. 

Information 

The running route around Hjörleifshöfði is beautiful, with stunning views of the whole area. On a clear day, you will see Katla Volcano and Mýrdalsjökull Glacier as well as the vast area of the black sand plains and beaches. It is popular to run and hike in this area and locals say that supernatural forces influence those who go about, giving them energy as well as a deep sense of relaxation and connection to the nature. 

The drive from Reykjavík to Vík takes about 2,5 hours. There are various options of accomodation around Vík and as well within Katla Geopark. Please contact info@vik.is for travel advice.
